Recommended Albums

Episode 10 of the Sisters Sing Soul will be posted in about two weeks. This will give those listeners who have not heard all of the programs a chance to catch up,and me the time to research and write a few more episodes. In the meantime I’d like to recommend what I consider to be some “must have” albums that have provided many of the songs featured in the series to date.

One of my hopes when I began this project was to introduce the largely unknown great female soul singers of the 1960’s and 1970’s to those who might be inclined to appreciate and even love their songs. There are many, many wonderful tracks by these artists that weren’t included in the finished programs simply because there wasn’t sufficient room for them. For those who would like to hear more superb songs from the artists featured in the first nine episodes, here is a list of albums on cd well worth acquiring.

The Complete Ann Peebles On Hi Records Volume 1:1969-1973

Dave Godin’s Deep Soul Treasures Volume 3 [Baby Washington,Bettye Lavette,Maxine Brown and others]

Atlantic Sisters Of Soul [Baby Washington,Jean Battle and others]

The Girls Got Soul [Baby Washington,Laura Lee and others]

Millie Jackson:It Hurts So Good

Gwen McCrae:Lay It On Me – The Columbia Years

Jean Wells:Soul On Soul

The Dial Records Southern Soul Story [Annette Snell and others]

Denise Lasalle:On The Loose/Trapped By A Thing Called Love

Lorraine Ellison:Sister Love – The Warner Brothers recordings

Candi Staton:Evidence – The Complete Fame Records Masters

The Complete Quiet Elegance [Frankie Gearing]

Laura Lee:The Chess Collection

Bettye Lavette:Souvenirs

The foregoing albums are loaded with fantastic soul songs. They all deserve a place in every soul lover’s collection.
